For the last couple of years, "lifestyle" projectors have asked you to make a trade. You got a gorgeous compact design, a gimbal stand and a smart TV system built in. In return, you gave up the things proper home cinema projectors take for granted: real lens shift, serious brightness and the freedom to put the projector where it suits the room rather than where the picture demands.
The new Hisense C3 range is where that trade ends. The C3 Pro, C3 Ultra and C3 Ultra Max keep everything people loved about the C2 series. They then add the hardware that until now you'd only find on much bigger, much less sociable machines. Here's what's changed, how the three models differ, and how to pick the right one for your room.
What's new: the C3 range at a glance
- 4K lossless lens shift, new to the range. You can move the picture up, down and sideways optically, without the softening you get from digital keystone.
- Lossless optical zoom on every model. Fill your screen from a range of distances, not just one exact spot.
- 3,000 to 5,000 ANSI lumens. The entry model now matches the brightness of the previous flagship C2 Ultra.
- A 7-level iris with up to 5,000:1 contrast. Hisense calls this CineBlack Pro, and it gives deeper blacks and more shadow detail in dark scenes.
- Devialet-tuned sound with a built-in subwoofer on all three models, reaching down to 50Hz.
- RGB triple laser colour with Dolby Vision, HDR10+ and IMAX Enhanced, on a 65" to 300" image.

The big one: lens shift changes where you can put it
If you've ever set up a projector at home, you'll know the frustration. The coffee table is too low, the shelf is off to one side, and the moment you tilt the projector the picture turns into a trapezium. Auto keystone fixes the shape digitally, but it does so by throwing away pixels. The bigger the correction, the softer the image.
Lens shift solves this optically. On the C3 Pro and C3 Ultra the lens moves the image by up to ±100% vertically and ±35% horizontally. In plain English, the projector can sit a full picture-height below or above your screen and still project a perfect, full-resolution 4K rectangle. The C3 Ultra Max goes further still, at ±120% vertical and ±47% horizontal.
This was the single most common question we had about the C2 range ("will it work from my sideboard?"). Now the answer is almost always yes. One thing to note: when lens shift is in use, auto keystone and auto eye protection switch off, though you can still fine-tune keystone manually.
Optical zoom: fill the screen from where you sit
All three models have lossless optical zoom, so you're no longer locked into a single distance to fill a given screen. Here's roughly where each model needs to sit for a 16:9 screen:
| Screen size | C3 Pro / C3 Ultra (0.9–1.5:1, 1.67X zoom) |
C3 Ultra Max (0.85–1.7:1, 2.0X zoom) |
|---|---|---|
| 100" | approx. 2.0m – 3.3m | approx. 1.9m – 3.8m |
| 120" | approx. 2.4m – 4.0m | approx. 2.3m – 4.5m |

That flexibility is what makes the C3 range so easy to live with. In a typical UK living room you can put the projector on a shelf behind the sofa, on a side table or on the ceiling, and still hit the screen size you want.
Picture quality: brighter, deeper, more cinematic
All three models use Hisense's RGB triple laser approach, with separate red, green and blue lasers rather than a single light source and a colour wheel. That's what gives these projectors such rich, saturated colour, and it's why Dolby Vision and HDR10+ content looks so convincing.

New for C3 is the 7-level iris lens. It works with Hisense's Dynamic Grayscale processing to push contrast up to 5,000:1. In practice, that means darker night skies and more detail in shadowy scenes, an area where compact projectors have traditionally struggled. IMAX Enhanced titles also show up to 26% more picture on supported content.
The C3 Ultra and C3 Ultra Max use Hisense's new MCL3A laser engine. The Ultra Max pairs it with TI's latest DMD imaging chip and, according to Hisense, reduces laser speckle by 10% compared with the C2 Ultra.
Sound that doesn't need a soundbar (but works brilliantly with one)
Every C3 has Devialet-tuned audio and a built-in subwoofer reaching down to 50Hz, with DTS Virtual:X for a wider soundstage. For a projector you can carry from room to room, the result is surprisingly full. The C3 Ultra runs a 2.1 system rated at 56W in total. The Ultra Max has a larger 2.8-litre acoustic chamber for extra weight in the low end.
If you want a proper home cinema system, the HDMI 2.1 eARC port makes it simple to add a soundbar or AV receiver. Ask us about pairing one.
Gaming: VRR, ALLM and two HDMI 2.1 ports
The C3 range is a serious option for console gamers. Both HDMI ports are HDMI 2.1, with ALLM (auto low latency mode) and VRR certification through Hisense's Game Mode Pro. Hisense quotes up to 240Hz at 1080p for fast-paced games, plus very low input lag. If you don't own a console, the built-in VIDAA system supports Xbox Cloud Gaming (Game Pass and a controller required) and other cloud gaming services.

Hisense C3 Pro: the smart buy

The C3 Pro matches the brightness of the previous flagship C2 Ultra and adds lens shift, the iris and Devialet sound. For most living rooms where you can draw the curtains for film night, it's all the projector you'll need. It's also the lightest of the three, so it's the easiest to move between rooms or out into the garden.
Hisense C3 Ultra: the all-rounder

The extra 1,000 lumens is what lets you watch the Saturday afternoon match without closing the blinds. If your room has big windows, light walls or a lot of ambient light, the Ultra is the one we'd recommend. It also uses the new MCL3A laser engine.
Hisense C3 Ultra Max: the no-compromise flagship

The Ultra Max is for people who want to go really big. With 5,000 lumens, it can drive a 120"+ screen in a bright room. Its wider lens shift and 2.0X zoom mean it will fit almost any layout, including a projector at the back of a long room or ceiling-mounted well off-centre. Add the larger audio chamber and reduced speckle, and it's the closest thing yet to a dedicated home cinema projector in a lifestyle body.
Our expert tip: pair it with the right screen
The C3 range will happily project onto a smooth white wall, and Intelligent Wall Colour Adaption even compensates for off-white paint. But a proper screen makes a bigger difference to contrast and colour than most people expect.
One important point: the C3 models are standard-throw projectors, not ultra short throw (UST). Many ALR/CLR screens are designed specifically for UST projectors that sit just below the screen, and they won't perform properly with a projector placed across the room. Look for a screen designed for standard or long throw, or give our team a call and we'll match the right material to your room and model.

Common questions
Is the C3 hard to set up?
No. Auto Magic AI Adjusting 3.0 handles focus, keystone, obstacle avoidance and fitting the picture to your screen automatically. The 360° gimbal stand lets you aim the projector at a wall, the ceiling or a screen in seconds. Lens shift and zoom are there when you want a permanent, pixel-perfect installation.
Can I mount it on the ceiling?
Yes. All three models can sit on a table, mount on a wall or go on the ceiling. Lens shift makes ceiling mounting far more forgiving than on previous models.
Do I need a separate streaming stick?
No. The VIDAA smart platform includes Netflix, YouTube, Prime Video and Disney+, and AirPlay 2 lets you cast from an iPhone, iPad or Mac.
I've got a C2. Is it worth upgrading?
If your C2 sits exactly where it needs to and you watch mainly in the evening, you'll still be very happy with it. If you've been fighting with placement, want a bigger picture or watch in daylight, the lens shift and extra brightness of the C3 Ultra or Ultra Max are a genuine step up.
The Personal Projector verdict
The C2 range proved that a compact projector could replace the TV. The C3 range proves it can do that and fit around your room rather than the other way round. For most homes, the C3 Ultra is the sweet spot: bright enough for daytime viewing, with the full set of new features. The C3 Pro is outstanding value if you can control the light. The C3 Ultra Max is the one to choose if you want the biggest, brightest picture in the most flexible package Hisense has made.
