Going green is not always easy in today’s technology dominated world. However, a new breed of gadget has the answer, and seeks to put the consumer completely in control by presenting all the information needed to manage your individual energy usage. Fascinating stuff.
Earlier this year British Gas pledged to put these ‘Smart Meters’ into a million homes by the end of 2010. It is estimated that this could cut home energy bills by approximately £1 billion in the next ten years. This will certainly be advantageous to big businesses and industries too. By allowing the user to view their energy consumption, the meter highlights power-greedy appliances. Using this information, the user is able to be more selective about their energy usage. Power to the people!
A few days ago, the BBC’s Spencer Kelly wrote on this newfound ability to save the planet “one gadget at a time”:
“Gadgets such as smart meters are part of the government's plan to cut carbon emissions. Due in your home sometime after 2013, they show you exactly what electricity you are using, and how much it is costing.” (http://bbc.in/brSIIH)
Have a look at E-On’s advert encouraging the nation to get energy ‘fit’ using these Meters to analyse their energy usage here.
There are even new iphone apps which can sync with Smart Meters to show you this information! So with these devices you can easily switch things on and off in your household to see how your energy usage is affected by specific objects and appliances. Resultantly, you can be more careful with those that are energy guzzlers and also check what is still on before you go to bed. Sounds pretty handy to me. Of course, all this still requires human effort but, overall, the Smart Meter is a hugely empowering gadget!
Rest assured that all our Personal Projectors are environmentally friendly with
- Lower running costs; low power consumption
- No mercury
- Longer life LED (no pricy replacement bulbs necessary)
We are looking forward to testing our Projectors with one of these nifty Smart Meters!
