Tips & Tricks for Projecting Outdoors

Projecting during daylight can be tricky — just like a TV, sunlight washes out the image. The good news is there are plenty of simple ways to maximise your viewing experience:

• Use a gazebo or canopy to block direct sunlight and stop the projected image fading.
• Use an Ambient Light Rejection (ALR) screen with a high gain to boost brightness. Some ALR screens only work with ultra short throw projectors, so always check compatibility first.
• Take a portable projector into a tent for a memorable camping trip.
• Alternatively, simply project in the shade, away from where the sun is facing.

The video below shows a 3,200 ANSI lumen projector used both indoors and outdoors with minimal shade. The outdoor image can be improved further by adding side shades or a gazebo.

Creating Your Outdoor Cinema

Choosing the right projector and screen is the key to a great outdoor setup. High-Brightness Lamp & Laser Projectors

These projectors are ideal for outdoor use thanks to their high brightness. There's a trade-off to be aware of: lamp and laser projectors deliver serious brightness, but generally don't include the extras found on portable models — and they're mains-powered, so an extension cable may be needed.

Watch out for marketing lumens. On Amazon and eBay, brightness figures are often quoted at 6–20 times the real ANSI lumen value. Always compare like with like — some of the high ANSI lumen models below would be advertised as "100,000+ lumens" using that inflated marketing method.

Portable: All-In-One Projectors

Portable projectors generally aren't as bright as lamp-based models, but they make up for it with built-in batteries, Android operating systems, wireless connectivity and far greater flexibility. They're the perfect all-in-one solution for projecting at night, in a tent, under a gazebo or in the shade.

Most portable models have a standard tripod mount on the base, so you can sit them on a mini tabletop tripod or a full floor-standing tripod. A tripod makes it much easier to angle the image onto your screen and is a well worth-while accessory at around £14–£29.

As always, ignore inflated marketing lumens — many listings claim brightness 6–20 times higher than the true ANSI figure. The specs below are real ANSI lumens.

Tip: the L300 is mains-powered for higher brightness at a lower price. For a completely wireless setup — camping trips or garden parties with no plug nearby — choose a battery-powered Impact model or the M550 Plus 4.0.

Don't Forget the Sound

Open-air spaces absorb sound, so even a projector with good built-in speakers can struggle to fill a garden. Adding dedicated audio is the single biggest upgrade you can make to an outdoor cinema — it's what turns a film into an experience.

• Bluetooth speakers — quick to set up and easy to move around. Every Pico Genie model and most projectors above pair wirelessly in seconds.
• Soundbars — deliver clearer dialogue and richer, room-filling sound for a true cinema feel. Ideal if your setup has a fixed position.

Worth knowing: when streaming over Bluetooth there can be a slight audio delay. For perfectly synced sound, use a wired connection or a soundbar with low-latency Bluetooth.

Ambient Light Rejection (ALR) Screens

ALR screen material is designed to reflect the projected image while absorbing ambient light — preserving deep blacks and vibrant colour so the picture stays punchy even in daylight. That makes ALR a brilliant choice for a garden, shed or bright lounge.

Some ALR screens only work with ultra short throw (UST) projectors, though non-UST ALR options also exist. It's important to take advice first — please get in touch via email, live chat or phone before ordering.

There are two main ALR options for outdoor use:

• CHiQ 100"–120" S-CK ALR Black Grid Screen (UST) — screen gain of 0.8, designed for ultra short throw projectors.
