Outdoor Projection: How to Create an Outdoor Cinema

Outdoor Projection: How to Create an Outdoor Cinema

Create the Ultimate Outdoor Cinema This Summer

Bring the big screen into your garden and enjoy films, sport and gaming under the open sky with friends and family. Whether you want to host a movie night on the lawn or watch the match while camping, we have a screen and projector option to suit every space and every budget.

A projector isn't just for outdoors either — the same kit doubles as a home cinema, a giant gaming display, or a screen for video calls and work. Read on for our tips, recommendations and a clear breakdown of the best projectors and screens for outdoor use.

Below you'll find our picks for ultra-portable projectors, high-brightness lamp and laser projectors, screens and audio. The video also explains how shade levels and a projector's ANSI lumens (true brightness) dramatically affect image quality outdoors.

Tips & Tricks for Projecting Outdoors

Projecting during daylight can be tricky — just like a TV, sunlight washes out the image. The good news is there are plenty of simple ways to maximise your viewing experience:

  • Use a gazebo or canopy to block direct sunlight and stop the projected image fading.
  • Use an Ambient Light Rejection (ALR) screen with a high gain to boost brightness. Some ALR screens only work with ultra short throw projectors, so always check compatibility first.
  • Take a portable projector into a tent for a memorable camping trip.
  • Alternatively, simply project in the shade, away from where the sun is facing.

The video below shows a 3,200 ANSI lumen projector used both indoors and outdoors with minimal shade. The outdoor image can be improved further by adding side shades or a gazebo.

Staying Safe & Comfortable Outdoors

  • Evenings can get cold — bring blankets, covers or an electric heater to stay warm through the film.
  • Keep projectors well away from water. Turn off sprinklers and move drinks away from the equipment.
  • Use an extension lead to power your devices outside — ideally a waterproof one to avoid damage.
  • Bring all equipment indoors at the end of the night and store it somewhere safe.
  • Keep cables tidy and secured down to prevent trips and accidents.

Creating Your Outdoor Cinema

Choosing the right projector and screen is the key to a great outdoor setup. We've selected a range of options — from high-powered lamp and laser projectors to ultra-portable LED models, plus a full range of screens to suit every budget. These work in shaded areas during the day, at dusk and at night, delivering glorious images up to 120" that pull you right into the film or the match.

High-Brightness Lamp & Laser Projectors

These projectors are ideal for outdoor use thanks to their high brightness. There's a trade-off to be aware of: lamp and laser projectors deliver serious brightness, but generally don't include the extras found on portable models — and they're mains-powered, so an extension cable may be needed.

Watch out for marketing lumens. On Amazon and eBay, brightness figures are often quoted at 6–20 times the real ANSI lumen value. Always compare like with like — some of the high ANSI lumen models below would be advertised as "100,000+ lumens" using that inflated marketing method.

Portable: All-In-One Projectors

Portable projectors generally aren't as bright as lamp-based models, but they make up for it with built-in batteries, Android operating systems, wireless connectivity and far greater flexibility. They're the perfect all-in-one solution for projecting at night, in a tent, under a gazebo or in the shade.

Most portable models have a standard tripod mount on the base, so you can sit them on a mini tabletop tripod or a full floor-standing tripod. A tripod makes it much easier to angle the image onto your screen and is a well worth-while accessory at around £14–£29.

As always, ignore inflated marketing lumens — many listings claim brightness 6–20 times higher than the true ANSI figure. The specs below are real ANSI lumens.

Don't Forget the Sound

Open-air spaces absorb sound, so even a projector with good built-in speakers can struggle to fill a garden. Adding dedicated audio is the single biggest upgrade you can make to an outdoor cinema — it's what turns a film into an experience.

  • Bluetooth speakers — quick to set up and easy to move around. Every Pico Genie model and most projectors above pair wirelessly in seconds.
  • Soundbars — deliver clearer dialogue and richer, room-filling sound for a true cinema feel. Ideal if your setup has a fixed position.
  • Wired connections — for lag-free audio, connect via the projector's 3.5mm, S/PDIF or HDMI ARC output where available.

Worth knowing: when streaming over Bluetooth there can be a slight audio delay. For perfectly synced sound, use a wired connection or a soundbar with low-latency Bluetooth.

Outdoor & Indoor Screen Options

We stock a wide range of screens for use indoors and out — fixed frame, portable, easy setup and Ambient Light Rejection (ALR). Popular outdoor choices include:

Please note: none of these screens are waterproof. Take them down at the first sign of rain — but they're perfectly happy used both indoors and outdoors otherwise.

Ambient Light Rejection (ALR) Screens

ALR screen material is designed to reflect the projected image while absorbing ambient light — preserving deep blacks and vibrant colour so the picture stays punchy even in daylight. That makes ALR a brilliant choice for a garden, shed or bright lounge.

Some ALR screens only work with ultra short throw (UST) projectors, though non-UST ALR options also exist. It's important to take advice first — please get in touch via email, live chat or phone before ordering.

There are two main ALR options for outdoor use:

Both use CHiQ's advanced rollable material technology to enhance image contrast, making them ideal for brighter areas.

Inflatable 140" Outdoor Screen

The Celexon Inflatable 140" screen is the ideal centrepiece for an outdoor cinema. It packs down to a manageable size, then sets up in seconds — just use the included pump to inflate it and attach the screen fabric (front projection as standard, or rear projection as an option).

Portable Screens

For flexible indoor and outdoor use, choose from fast-fold screens with flight cases (80" to 140") or lightweight 80" tripod screens. When using a lightweight tripod screen outdoors, secure it with tent pegs, sandbags or a rope tensioner to keep it stable in the breeze.

Electric & Manual Pull-Down Screens

These wall and ceiling-mounted screens fix easily to a shed, wall or fence panel. They're designed for indoor use, so — as with all screens — make sure they can be removed quickly if the weather turns.
