Vivitek Qumi Review: on show at IFA exhibition, Berlin
- 05 Sep, 2011
Personal Projector Ltd have just returned from the IFA show in Berlin this week where the new Vivitek Qumi was on show. It delighted the huge crowds with whats quite simply the best LED projector made to date. Overall the Vivitek Qumi Q2 was streets ahead of anything else on show at IFA this year based on its overall design, image quality, performance, size, connectivity and other options such as 3D/HD ready. It also includes on the UK model free apple cables as well as all the usual features such as HDMI, VGA, AV in/out, speakers. An extended battery is also available as an option.
Qumi has many added features not available on any other projector
Whilst most users will probably run the projector from the mains power, you can buy an optional extra battery which is not much thicker than your thumb nail and very neatly docks underneath the Qumi so it still looks quite sleek even with the battery on there. The battery will give you around 1 to 1.5 hrs of power at a reduced lumens rating of 50 lumens (instead of the usual 300 lumens). We tested the Qumi battery at the show and it really was still a good image, in fact still a better brightness than most pocket projectors available today.
What is also very noticeable is how small and light the Qumi Q2 is which fits in the palm of your hand and could even fit in a large overcoat pocket. In fact its so small it could even be classed as a pocket projector as it also has an optional battery. Overall its much smaller than any other products at this brightness level.
Battery
Having the battery makes it a great solution if you’re in an area where mains power is limited or you don’t want to be trailing power cables all over the place. For business users having the battery means you can simply turn on the projector and in less than a second and your presentation is running on the wall or screen. If you work on sites where this is limited power then you can be sure you are getting a large projection image at the highest quality available. For consumers it means you can use the mini projector on holiday, camping, in the car or even for gaming.
Image quality
Apart from buying the Casio range of projectors the Qumi is now the best resolution available in a pocket or palm sized projector. It supports up to UXGA (1600 x 1200) with a standard resolution/output of WXGA 1200 x 800. Its also 720p providing great definition for your movies.
The Vivitek Qumi projector is also HD Ready and 3D ready so you can be sure you are future proofing your purchase with the very latest features.
The screen size in a dark room will easily go to 150 inches and even in normal lighting conditions its like having two 45 inch plasma TV’s in your pocket providing a 90” screen.
Portability
Weighing only 617g (1.4 pounds) and easily fitting in the palm of your hand, whether you want to present PowerPoint slides to 20 people in a boardroom or simply watch a movie then the Qumi Q2 you will find is ultra portable.
Connectivity
The UK product also comes with Apple cables included worth around £40. This provides simple connectivity to almost any Apple device so you can project video/photos from your iPhone or iPad.
In the box there are 2 types of HDMI adaptors supplied:-
- Mini HDMI --> Mini HDMI (For use with i.e. Flip, video recorders etc, some phones)
- HDMI --> Mini HDMI (For use with i.e. computers, DVD, BD Players etc. This cable can also be used with an optional Apple HDMI adapter for iPad/iPhone or mirroring cable (available from the Apple store £35 approx) so you can see a mirror image of all your content on the ipad not just photos or videos).
As standard the Qumi also comes with a universal dock connector so it means most connections will be available to connect to any mobile device such as a smartphone, TV or laptop.
Also noticeable is the improved iamge quality available when connecting a pocket projector via HDMI eg from your laptop or smartphone you will see a big increase in quality and the Qumi performs well in this area.
Overall the Vivitek Qumi Q2 was the best LED projector at the show by far and we think it will be for quite some time with this range of features making it the brightest, smallest and lightest portable LED projector ever launched. At £499 its also a great price.
